Why Plaster, Stucco or Render?

In many countries, a building is not considered finished until it has been rendered. Mediterranean countries and elsewhere in Europe, a brick structure is not considered complete until it is rendered. Rendering or stucco finish is very common in the United States. Scratch beneath the rendered surface of many of those gleaming white homes on beautiful hillsides and it is likely they were constructed of brick.
The aesthetic beauty of rendering is now being rediscovered in Australia and qualified solid renderers are in increased demand.

Sand and cement combined with additives such as chopped fibre (GRC) or rendering over steel mesh frames for Ferro Cement render is one way to construct monolithic shell structures

How is Rendering Done?

Cement, sand and lime are the main ingredients in the render. By adding lime the render becomes a creamier texture and more elastic making it more workable and less prone to cracking after it dries. The sand used in rendering needs to be fine and free of impurities. Other ingredients used in rendering mixes include pigments, polymers, polozanic material, bonding agents and additives to slow or speed the drying or curing process.

Render is applied in thin, smooth coats using a trowel or a spray system. Finish coats may be finished with a trowel, a brush, a hessian bag or a sponge, depending on the desired surface texture.

Modern, hi-tech acrylic pre-mixed rendering products have good waterproofing properties and can be applied to surfaces normal render cannot adhere to. Some renders can be applied with special spray equipment. Acrylic renders can set within 24 hours, while traditional renders take up to 28 days to fully cure.

Can I Do DIY Rendering and Plastering?

Anyone can learn to render and provided as a beginner, you don't expect to render a perfectly smooth even surface on your first job there are elementary principals to the work which will yield an acceptable finish for many applications.
